Queensland is the home of the Great Barrier Reef, Fraser Island, The Whitsundays and a host of other spectacular natural attractions. Now it's got its own website.

I've got fond memories of backpacking through Queensland. The other state besides New South Wales that makes up the bulk of Australia's East Coast, Queensland starts at the beautiful city of Brisbane and then runs on up through some of the most spectacular natural wonders in the world. As I was really getting into scuba diving at the time, I enjoyed going on a yacht cruise out to the Whitsunday Islands where we could jump in straight off the boat, and of course, doing a liveaboard out on the Great Barrier Reef. Another unexpected highlight was visiting Fraser Island, the only island in the world entirely made of sand which has its own ecosystem as a result.

The thing with Australia is that it's just so bloody big, it's hard to get a grip on it all. Getting an overview of what's going on even in one state can be a bit daunting. So I was quite impressed with the Backpacking Queensland website, which is a well-presented and easy to get around introduction to state's key attractions and areas. There's listings of hostels to stay at and travel info about how cover the big distances. It's a good general introduction to Queensland's tropical delights.

There's an interesting news article about how more backpackers are heading for Queensland in the Courier Mail. It notes that the advent of budget air carriers in Australia like Virgin Blue has completely changed the way backpackers move around, enabling them to jump big distances pretty cheaply rather than having to rely on long distance buses as before. It's worth keeping an eye on VirginBlue's site for bargains - I got some insanely cheap fares a couple of years ago.
