26 Nov: Bangkok’s Suvarnabhumi Airport is currently under occupation by political protesters and all flights are cancelled. Here are some useful links to get the latest news on what’s happening at the airport

It’s like a scene from a movie thriller, but it’s all too real – 3000 passengers are currently stranded at Bangkok’s Suvarnabhumi Airport thanks to the building being occupied by PAD protesters, who want to topple the current Thai government. As of this writing, ALL flights, inbound and outbound, have been cancelled to Suvarnabhumi. If you have a flight scheduled to arrive or depart from Suvarnabhumi, please check directly with your airline about the situation and request they keep you regularly updated.

You can use the FlightStats Bangkok Airport Real Time Information widget if you wish, but checking with your airline is a much better idea.

If you are in Bangkok at the moment and trying to depart on a flight, here is a list of airline office phone numbers – contact your airline direct to find out what’s going on and when you can reschedule.

You can get the latest news on what is happening from The Nation and Bangkok Post websites. These are Thailand’s two English language daily newspapers. The Nation has a particularly good breaking news page that is worth checking. ThaiVisa has a very long, and somewhat ill-tempered, thread on its discussion board which mixes up breaking news with lots of opinion about how this situation has come about.

You can also check Google News, but the two domestic newspapers are likely to be first with any new developments.

Note that international flights direct to other Thailand airports, e.g. Koh Samui and Phuket, are currently unaffected. As long as you are not transiting through Bangkok, you should be able to fly with no problems.

Let’s hope this situation resolves itself quickly, the airport reopens and the poor tourists caught in the middle of this get to go home safely.
