Bangkok is a burgeoning destination for medical tourism, and getting cosmetic dental treatments like teeth whitening that only take a couple of hours and are low risk is increasingly popular due to the very cheap prices compared to the US and Europe. Here are a couple of recommended Bangkok dental clinics from personal experience.
You may have thought about having some dentistry done while in Thailand and naturally have some reservations. Knowing where to go, what to expect and how much it will cost is definitely a step in the right direction. Thailand is becoming a very popular spot for medical tourism of every kind particularly for cosmetic procedures. Dentistry in my home country of America, for instance, is painfully expensive (no pun intended) and is often not covered by medical insurance. One way to avoid the exorbitant costs is to have your dental work done in Thailand. The downside is that if it there is a problem there is limited liability on the dental practitioner, so you have to weigh the balance of that. I live in Bangkok and have recently had some work done and thought I’d share my experience with anyone looking to have dentistry done while in Bangkok.
Types of Procedures
Basically you can have anything that you like done to your teeth but some of the most popular options are whitening, root canals, tooth extractions (especially wisdom teeth) and orthodontics. These procedures can be done at a fraction of the price as compared with prices back home.
Teeth whitening is probably the most popular procedure for dental tourists as it’s incredibly expensive back home and fairly quick and painless to have done while visiting Thailand. Depending on the type of whitening you can this can be done in one trip (as with laser whitening) or multiple trips (bleaching or non-laser whitening) depending on the type of whitening that you have done and the condition of your teeth.
I have several friends who have had both types done and they both reported sensitivity after having the procedure done but they have very bright smiles at the moment. Also be aware that if you have the laser treatment done your teeth will continue to whiten for several days after the treatment- much to the surprise of my colleague. We were actually starting to wonder how white his teeth would get. They stopped whitening after three days and he’s got very pearly whites. The average cost for laser whitening is about 10,000 baht and the procedure takes about an hour.
Clinics & Hospitals
The next big question on your mind is probably where to have your dental work done. There are an abundance of dental clinics and hospitals in Bangkok and I can’t vouch for them all but will tell you about the couple I’ve either been to myself of have friends that have.
Bangkok Smile Dental Clinic
This is a great little clinic with very professional and English-speaking staff. They’re also conveniently located within walking distance from the Sukhumvit MRT and Asok BTS stations. A friend of mine who had whitening done there even had her feet massaged as they were doing the whitening. You’ve got to love Thai hospitality! You can check out their website for more information about pricing and procedures and even email them to make an appointment. They have quite a large foreign clientele and I have gotten very good treatment there as have my friends and colleagues and most of all their prices are very affordable and the facility modern and clean. You can check out the prices and packages directly on their website – www.bangkoksmiledental.com
Bumrungrad Hospital
Bumrungrad is the most famous hospital in Bangkok especially so for foreigners. The hospital itself is fully-equipped with the latest medical equipment and technology. They also have a large number of expat and international clientele which means they are able to provided top-notch service and above-average medical care. Their staff will be able to answer your questions in English and you can even email them for quotations and even set up your appointment by e-mail. They generally respond within 24 hours to all email requests and can answer all of your questions before you even step into the hospital. They are also conveniently located within walking distance of Nana BTS station and provide a shuttle bus which departs every 30 minutes.
As they are a big hospital expect the prices to be a bit more expensive than other facilities in Bangkok but if you’re looking for reassurance you probably won’t mind paying a little extra for the peace of mind that comes with knowing you are in a world-class facility. Their prices aren’t listed but you can you find out anything you want to know on their website and email them for a quotation and to set up an appointment with a doctor of your choosing. They have a section of their website dedicated to helping foreigners arrange their medical treatment while in Bangkok. This is the direct link to Bumrungrad’s Dental Centre
I hope that information helps point you in the right direction. I’m not a medical expert and can only speak from my own experience and that of my friends and colleagues. I would suggest having a look at the two places that I’ve suggested as a starting point in deciding what procedures you’d like to have done and where you’d like to get them done. Good luck!
