Personal tips:
Do not, by any means go to the following
places:

1. Royal Lapidary Co. Ltd - http://www.tripadvisor.com/ShowTopic-g293916-i3687-k1637153-Jewellery_scam_Royal_Lapidary_Co_Ltd-Bangkok.html

2. James fashion - http://www.tripadvisor.com/ShowTopic-g293916-i3687-k1284023-l7716080-Traps_to_avoid_James_Fashion_Tailors_Avoid-Bangkok.html#7716080

Do try the following things:
1. Tongs tour - for more detail - http://www.tripadvisor.com/ShowTopic-g293916-i3687-k998479-Which_of_Tong_s_team_to_use-Bangkok.
html

2. Crown Tailor - http://www.tripadvisor.com/ShowTopic-g293916-i3687-k960055-Tailors-Bangkok.html

Those first two above were two of the places that are basically paying tuk tuks to get gas coupons from there i.e. the scam.

That's a cracking article on <a href="http://www.ubertramp.com/backpacking-tips-how-to-avoid-getting-overcharged-abroad/" rel="nofollow">avoiding getting overcharged</a>. Very slinky site redesign too - I need to get my finger out and give Travelhappy a makeover

Excellent post! Very good points and well worth a read for anyone hitting thailand in the near future. Its' strange, I also did a post today on getting ripped off (or at least how to avoid it!) and have a few more in the pipeline ove the coming week or two. I'll be sure to mention this one!
cheers
