Social networking sites like FaceBook and Craigslist are making it easier to find decent apartments to rent in Bangkok, thanks to word-of-mouth and tip offs from other flat hunters.
A while ago I wrote Finding Cheap Long Term Accommodation in Bangkok, which gave a rundown of how I went about finding my first couple of apartments in the city. There’s lots of useful links and ideas about pricing in that article, so you might want to check it out if you’re looking for Bangkok apartments. Since then the Bangkok rental market seems to have grown quite a lot, but you still need to look hard for places that don’t cost a $1000 US a month. As ever, I strongly recommend you see any apartment before you make any sort of commitment. Stay in a cheap Bangkok hotel for a week or so while you check out apartments. You can also find a list of Bangkok Serviced Apartments you can book online at Apartment-Bangkok.com, along with more advice on how to go Bangkok apartment hunting.
Social networking sites have started to be very useful for Bangkok. When I wrote the original story, Bangkok Craigslist was just getting started – now it’s got a stack of apartments to rent as savvy real estate agents have started using it to display their rentals. (I wish Craigslist would make it mandatory to post photos with rental postings – they are near useless without them).
FaceBook is also a surprisingly good source of rental info thanks to its Marketplace feature. You can go straight to the Facebook Thailand House and Apartment Rental Listings through this link. Note that this covers all of Thailand, not just Bangkok, so needs some skimming.
CouchSurfing.com is also a great place to ask questions and look for info. Just recently there was a thread about cheap long term accommodation that mentioned these two places – Sailom Apartment and LKN Inn – I can’t vouch for either of them, but they are very reasonably priced.
ThaiVisa.com also recently launched a Classifieds section which now has a burgeoning Thailand House Rentals section – follow the link to browse more.
Finally, free listings newspaper BK Magazine has weekly apartment classified listings – their website is currently a mess but hopefully they will produce their promised redesign which will feature an online classsifieds area where apartment details and pix can be posted. For now, the paper version will have to do.
If you’ve got any more tips on good, cheap accommodation in Bangkok, do leave a comment, especially if you’ve stayed there. Real estate agents – please do not post comments below. Email me direct.
