Imagine walking into a bakery and reaching for a loaf of bread… only to find severed heads, hands and feet resting on the shelves. It’s not something out of the movie Saw but a real bakery in Bangkok that creates grimly realistic body parts from dough

This is not a new Bangkok story, but having discovered this video today, I thought it was worth recapping. Art student Kittiwat Unarrom’s parents spent much of his degree sculpting the human form – and then he decided to use his parents’ bakery to make body parts from dough. The video shows how amazingly – and horribly – realistic they are, and it’s all the more eerie for the lack of commentary on it – there’s a little bit of conversation in Thai about halfway through, but that’s about it.

You can get the full story behind why Kittiwat started creating these ghoulish masterpieces from this Associated Press story – there’s some interesting intent behind why he did it, certainly worthwhile in any discussion of art. This Bangkok Day Tours page has a very good collection of photos from the bakery if you want to see even more bread body parts in all their glory. They also run trips to the bakery, which is in Ratchaburi, 90 kilometres from central Bangkok, out in the great BKK sprawl. I’m not sure if these tours are still actually running, but I assume so. It would be interesting to know if Kittiwat is still making the bread and how his opinions about it have changed after he first got thrust into the media spotlight a couple of years ago.

I had heard about this bakery a few months ago. My sister and I were travelling in Thailand a few weeks ago, and as we were driving past Ratchaburi, we decided to see if we could track it down. But I could remember is that it was in this town – I had no address details.

No problem – we’ll just ask around in town. Imagine trying find this info out from locals with very limited English!! Key words were bakery, art, body parts. Hmmm….

Finally – one guy understood, and escorted us on a 5 min drive to where he thought we wanted to go – the local minimarket!

Oh well – we never did find it!
