Automatic Teller Machines are appearing more and more frequently in Cambodia, making it easier to get out cash while you’re travelling in the country
One thing I didn’t mention in my recent article about visiting Cambodia’s capital city Phnom Penh is that I found several ATMs available for tourists to use. So what, you may think – but the arrival of ATMs in Cambodia is a very recent development. When I was first travelling in Cambodia in 2003, less than 4 years ago, ATMs were a rarity. You had to make sure you were aware of bank opening times to get exchange travellers cheques or draw advances on credit cards. It’s not that big of a deal, but it’s easy to forget which day it is when you’re travelling and then suddenly realise it’s the weekend and you’ve got no money and there are no banks to provide you with any more…
In Phnom Penh itself, there’s s a very shiny ANZ Bank branch on Sisowath Quay, just a few hundred metres up the road from the FCC, which makes it very central and convenient. There are also ATMs available in Siem Reap, the town nearest to Angkor Wat, and the port town of Sihanoukville. You can find a complete list of Cambodia ATMs on the website of Frizz Restaurant, which is also located on Sisowath Quay in Phnom Penh – kudos to them for providing this comprehensive list.
