The beach town of Sihanoukville has long been a backpacker favourite in Cambodia. Now the town’s airport has reopened with 1 hour flights to and from Angkor Wat in the north of the country
Sihanoukville Airport reopened a couple of weeks ago, paving the way for more visitors to easily get to this beautiful seaside town on Cambodia’s southern coast. The airport was built several years ago but various internal politics prevented it actually operating until now. Sihanoukville is an ideal place to go and chill out after seeing the temples at Angkor – there is a collection of good beaches, with Occutheal Beach being the finest. The town itself has a collection of good restaurants and a wide choice of accommodation too.
The International Herald Tribune wrote about the background of the airport’s opening, but didn’t actually mention any of the airlines flying into Sihanoukville. At the moment, the Cambodian airline PMTAir seem to be the only company flying from Sihanoukville to Siem Reap (the town near Angkor Wat).
The alternative to flying is to get a bus from Siem Reap to Phnom Penh and then from Phnom Penh to Sihanoukville. This would be a pretty long journey – 10 hours at least.
