Hong Kong Harbourview Hotel is a good budget choice for central Hong Kong if you want to avoid backpacker places but don’t want to spend a fortune

I was a little concerned about staying at the Hong Kong Harbourview as friends told me that Wan Chai, the district in which it’s located, is also Hong Kong’s haven for girlie bars and other nefarious pursuits – so I was wondering what clientele I would run into in the lobby.

However, the Hong Kong Harbourview is affiliated with the YMCA and seems to be squeaky clean as a result. It’s a bona fide hotel, and it’s quite posh too – while the elevators and lobby are a little chintzy, the room itself that I stayed in was excellent. It was small but had everything I wanted – a comfortable double bed, a hot, powerful shower and a kettle and fridge. Everything in the room was new and worked properly. There was even a view of sorts towards the harbour along with a flat screen TV on the wall.

At $80 US a night the Hong Kong Harbourview is not cheap, but for Hong Kong it’s a great price. It’s also in a very good location – it’s about 10 minutes walk maximum from Wan Chai underground station, which is only a couple of stops along from Central, which is the epicentre of Hong Kong.

The hotel is carrying out renovations until April, so during work hours there’s a lot of noise – after 6pm they stop.

If you look on Google Map below, you can see Wan Chai station in the bottom right and “Harbour View International House” in the top left – that’s the hotel. Scroll around to see more of Hong Kong.

I also thoroughly recommend the Groovy Map of Hong Kong as the easiest way to quickly orientate yourself and find your way around the city – it’s just as good as the Bangkok Groovy Map.
