If you bought an iPhone, Apple locked you into using a particular network – until now. In Hong Kong, the Apple store has started selling unlocked iPhones that do not require a specific network contract
One for the gadget fans – if you’re passing through Hong Kong, you can pick up an unlocked iPhone completely legally – because they’re being sold direct from the official Apple store.
The 8GB version is available for about $US 695 (5400 Hong Kong Dollars), while the 16GB iPhone costs about $US798 (6200 HK Dollars), according to the iPhone page of Apple’s Hong Kong store site.
The “iPhone 3G purchased at the Apple Online Store can be activated with any wireless carrier,” the site states. “Simply insert the SIM from your current phone into iPhone 3G and connect to iTunes 8 to complete activation.”
That means you can use the iPhone with any network — although I guess you’d have to check with the network about if they support all the iPhone’s functions.
