It’ll be quiet at Travelhappy for the next two weeks as I’m off to Japan with my parents as they celebrate their retirement. Hopefully I’ll have some interesting stories to tell when I get back
I’m quite old fashioned when it comes to writing about travelling. I prefer to do it after the fact rather than writing on the road. The idea of posting blogs while I’m travelling just seems like too much pressure. Indeed, the other reason I like travelling is to break the daily grind by getting away from the screen and keyboard – so I’ll not be writing anything here while in Japan.
I’ve been to Tokyo once before, to visit Lindy when she was teaching English in Japan: I only wrote previously about the size of own accommodation, documented in A Very Short Walk Around A Tokyo Apartment. I’m hoping to write up my favourite yakatori restaurant in old town Tokyo, plus the delights of Kyoto and Hiroshima.
One person who did keep a blog of their time in Japan is Lonely Planet writer Simon Sellars, who has explored and documented Northern Japan for the guidebook company. His Northern Honshu blog is definitely worth a look. I know Simon through our shared fondness for the writing of JG Ballard and Simon’s site Ballardian.com
Until the beginning of November, sayonara…
