Singapore Manga Classes – Photo Friday
by Chris Mitchell on February 15, 2008
Every Friday, a new photo of amazing Asian people and places here on Travelhappy. This week – learn to draw manga!
Spotted whilst out strolling one evening in Singapore – this poster for Manga Drawing classes. The craze for manga continues unabated across South East Asia – actually, it’s not a craze anymore as opposed to a full-blown genre that’s here to stay. Thai kids, for example, learn Japanese just so they can read manga comics without having to wait for the translated versions. Singapore doesn’t have much of a reputation for promoting culture with its strait-laced, draconian approach to law and order, but there is a thriving animation industry within the city-state. (If you’re interested in reading more about Singapore’s harsh regime, check out William Gibson’s now 15 year old but still vital travel piece for Wired:
Disneyland With The Death Penalty).
