Storm Coming To Lankayan, Borneo – Photo Friday
by Chris Mitchell on January 11, 2008
Every Friday, a new photo of amazing Asian people and places here on Travelhappy. This week – a storm coming to the blissfully empty beach of Lankayan, Borneo

When I first went to Borneo in 2004, it was still regarded as a bit off the map by many travellers. Even though there were quite a few backpackers, it still felt like discovering a place for yourself. Lankayan was one of my favourite places – a tiny island off Sandakan which has only one diving resort on it with around 20 guests maximum. The island is a designated turtle sanctuary where they can lay their eggs in peace, and the reefs around the island provide spectacular diving and snorkelling. The beach itself is beautiful and pretty much deserted, except for this tiny beach bar that sits on a mini-peninsular. It’s a very photogenic place. Last year Malaysia spent millions on promoting tourism and this same image ends their television adverts – minus the black cloud rolling in. Lankayan is a real success story in terms of being an eco-resort that has managed to restore previously damaged reefs and decimated fish populations back to good health, and provide a sanctuary for the turtles too, all the while managing to stay successfully in business. I’ve written about
Lankayan’s constant battle with poachers if you’re interested in finding out more.
