Every Friday, a new photo of amazing Asian people and places here on Travelhappy. This week – the Tian Tan Buddha at Lantau Island, Hong Kong.

Once on Lantau, a half hour bus ride snakes through the mountainous, densely forested island until you reach the immense Buddha itself, seated on a mountain top overlooking the island. At 34 metres high and made of bronze, it’s quite stunning. It’s hard to believe that the madness of downtown Hong Kong is only an hour away from this tranquil place of worship, which retains its serenity despite hundreds of pilgrims coming to pay their respects.
The sun was out in full force when we climbed the steps to the Buddha’s base so it was difficult to get a photo of his face – I settled for this shot of the Buddha’s back, which has its own character. Below is a sideview of the Buddha’s face. There’s more info on the Buddha at Wikipedia.
