With so many budget air carriers appearing in Asia, there is an ever expanding list of destinations that is now accessible to cost conscious travellers. Budget Airline Guide is one site trying to keep track of the latest cheap flights news.
I’ve written previously about the ever increasing amount of budget flights from Thailand to Laos, Cambodia, Vietnam and many more Asian countries. A quick search on flight comparison sites like Compare Flight Pricesand SkyScanner.net turn up lots of bargain fares. (See my previous article on where to find cheap flights online). Competition between budget airlines in Asia is growing rapidly and there are more routes and falling prices with each week. One website I’ve recently found that is useful for keeping up with budget carriers is the straightforwardly named Budget Airline Guide. It’s actually global in scope, but as much of the budget carrier activity is happening in Asia, there is plenty of use here to budget travellers. The big, well-established carriers like Air Asia and Cebu Pacific have their own news pages, but the real gem here is the Asia forum which seems to be pretty well populated and useful for asking for help in figuring out an itinerary.
I’d definitely recommend checking on this site about the two airport problem in Bangkok, where domestic and international flights are divided between the old Don Muang airport and the new Suvarnabhumi airport, but not with much logic. While most domestic carriers like Nok Air and One Two Go fly from Don Muang, not all of them do. AirAsia, for example, operates both its domestic and international flights from Suvarnabhumi. Therefore you need to be extra careful if you are planning connecting flights as it’s a long transit time and a lot of hassle to get from one airport to the other. (I’ve written more about dealing with Bangkok’s two airport problem previously).
On a personal note, I’ve just discovered the budget carrier Oasis Hong Kong through Budget Airline Guide, who fly from Hong Kong to London Gatwick for as little as £270 including all taxes! (That’s looking to book for March 2008, so maybe it’s not so cheap if you don’t book so far in advance). As there are very cheap flights from Hong Kong to Bangkok and elsewhere in Asia, this could be a great way of getting to Asia from the UK cheaply. I’ll be looking on the site forum for feedback from other travellers about whether Oasis are any good.
