Despite the fact the internet is ubiquitous these days, many hotels around the world still have to offer their guests a decent internet service. For many hotels, internet access is simply another way to gouge the customer, charging huge connection fees. The arrival of wireless internet access should have made it cheaper and easier for hotels to provide internet access to the rooms of each of their guests - instead, many hotels still treat wi-fi as a premium luxury and charge customers even more for the privilege of using it.
To add insult to injury, many hotels don't have their wifi connections correctly set up, so that often guests can't use wifi in their own rooms - they have to use it in the lobby. And even if you do get it working in your room, it can be painfully slow.
So, here's two recommendations for hotels that provide high speed, good quality wireless internet access in Bangkok - one is The Old Bangkok Inn and the other is Luxx. (You can book Luxx directly online through Travelhappy). Both hotels get rave reviews for their wi-fi access on TripAdvisor from other travellers - and indeed, The Old Bangkok Inn recently featured in Time magazine as it not only has wifi but also a PC and DVD player in every room!
If you're on a tighter budget that precludes staying at these hotels, there are a few places you can get free wireless internet access in Bangkok and there are also many, many cheap internet cafes where you can check your email. If you're looking to connect your laptop, I recommend Times Square Internet on the 1st floor of Times Square mall by Asoke BTS station. They have lots of workstations where you can connect your laptop, get decent coffee and also have plenty of normal PC terminals as well.
