Lonely Planet have completely overhauled their Bangkok guidebook, adding more pictures, more colour and more organisation to the way the info is provided

Bangkok Lonely PlanetJust published is the new edition of Lonely Planet’s Bangkok guide, which sees a major change in the way Lonely Planet present their books. It’s part of an ongoing revamp that’s going across all of LP’s books as far as I can tell. Lonely Planet Bangkok has more colour and more pictures in it than previous editions, and it’s divided up into sections by theme – Sleeping, Eating, Shopping etc – that are barcoded on the pageside to let you easily flick to the right place. It’s written by Joe Cummings and China Williams who have produced previous editions so there’s probably not any massive changes to the content itself, more the presentation of it. These are welcome changes – the big problem with Lonely Planet up to now is that their books could be quite hard to navigate through, and they lacked eyecatching attention grabbers to inspire the reader with different ideas of what to see and do. With this edition, they’ve made the Lonely Planet Bangkok much more user friendly.

If you buy Lonely Planet Bangkok on Amazon.com or Amazon.co.uk, be sure that you get the right edition! The new one is pictured here and is published in September 2006. The previous edition, published in 2004, features a monk walking past a garage door.

I also greatly recommend the Groovy Map to Bangkok as well as the ideal easy-to-carry guide around the city – much better than Lonely Planet’s maps.
