At 3 AM local time this morning, Bangkok’s new Suvarnabhumi welcomed the first planes arriving on its runways. So far on its first full day of operations, the new airport is running fairly smoothly

Despite all the fears that the rushed opening of the new Bangkok airport known as Suvarnabhumi (“Golden Land”), it looks as if the transfer from the city’s old Don Muang airport to its brand new one has gone smoothly. The Nation newspaper was reporting this morning that there have been some computer glitches whihc have only caused minor delays.

However, work around the terminal still goes on apace to finish shops and other amenities, and there have been reports of leaks in the ceiling of what’s claimed to be the world’s biggest single terminal airport, exacerbated by the current heavy rain moving in from China.

CNN have already run a glowing report on the new Bangkok airport, so now we just need to see if it will continue to run smoothly in the coming days.
