If you’re looking for somewhere unique to stay in Chiang Mai, there is now a wide selection of boutique hotels in Thailand’s northern capital to suit all tastes

Chiang Mai has become ever more popular in the last decade, but until recently there wasn’t much choice in accommodation for those looking for something beyond backpacker guesthouses and international chain hotels. That’s all changed with an excellent collection of boutique hotels now located throughout Chiang Mai.

4 Star:
Tamarind Village – Chiang Mai’s original boutique hotel which is an oasis of calm in the middle of the city

Rachamanka – the most expensive of Chiang Mai’s boutique hotels, built by the same architect at Tamarind Village and inspired by Phra That Lampang Luang temple in Lampang. If you can afford to stay here, do so.

U Hotel Superior Room

U Hotel - newly opened and very chic in the city centre. The decor may be modelled after old world Thailand, but the U Hotel is up to date with plasma screens, free wifi and iPod docks in every room

3 Star:
Duang Champa – a well regarded hotel in Chiang Mai’s centre with friendly and attentive staff

Manathai Village Hotel – Great facilities for relaxing, including an excellent spa

Tea Vana\

Tea Vana Chiang Mai – on the banks of the River Ping and 5 minutes walk from the Night Bazaar, the Tea Vana is one of the city’s newest boutique hotels.

6 Star:
Mandarin Oriental Dhara Dhevi – there’s nothing boutique about this ultra-luxurious property, the Mandarin Oriental’s first resort rather than hotel, which was built by over 300 local artisans to create a superb testament to northern Thailand’s Lanna heritage. Even if you can’t afford to stay here, visiting for a stroll in the grounds and a drink is definitely worth doing.
