Up until the end of October, there are some big discounts, free nights and other chunky incentives to book a stay at some of Thailand’s best hotels
As well as the outbreak of cheap air fares in Thailand thanks to a price war between several Asian airlines, there’s also some steep discounts currently being offered at hotels all across Thailand. Right now it’s the low tourist season in Thailand (ie it can be pretty rainy at times) but if you are not too bothered about some tropical downpours then there quite a few hotel bargains to be had. There is a range of offers available, from straightforward discounts on the nightly price (up to 30 per cent), to free nights if you stay a certain length of time, to freebies like complimentary airport transfer.
Online hotel booking service Agoda has launched special offer pages for each major destination in Thailand, showcasing the hotel offers available in each area. These offers are continually updated. See their pages on discount hotels in Bangkok, Chiang Mai, Koh Samui and Phuket for examples – to see the special offers at other Thailand destinations, simply select the destination from the drop down menu on the top right of the page.
You can compare the prices that Agoda offers with those offered by Sawasdee, one of the other major Thailand online hotel booking providers. You can browse their Thailand hotel prices and listings by area – see Bangkok, Chiang Mai, Koh Samui and Phuket for examples – special deals are noted on the right hand side in the remarks section of the listings. To see all Thailand destinations available through Sawasdee, see the main Thailand Hotels page.
You can also use HotelsCombined to try and ensure you pay the lowest possible price for any given hotel. HotelsCombined compares over 20 different booking websites – including Agoda but not Sawasdee – and then presents you with a comparison of what it costs to book the same hotel on each different booking website. That way you get to see which is the cheapest site to book it through instantly.
The only drawback with HotelsCombined is that they are not as comprehensive in their coverage of Thailand as Agoda or R24 – HotelsCombined don’t carry any hotel listings for Koh Lanta for example. I’ve also found using Agoda for the majority of hotel bookings has actually paid off well – their points system is quite generous and converts to proper cash discounts on future bookings. I got $50 off a recent booking through Agoda thanks to using some of my points. If you’re going to book a lot of hotels for your travels, using one provider might be beneficial.
As Thailand heads into the high season from November, when traditionally the most tourists arrive in the country over the Christmas break, no doubt many of these bargain prices will dry up. However, given that tourists arrivals look like they will continue to be down quite a lot this year, there may well still be bargains if you hunt around. As I’ve written before, booking a hotel at Christmas in Thailand isn’t that easy if you want a good deal – that might change this year.
