Westerners are often in demand in India and elsewhere in Asia as movie extras – you won’t get a George Clooney-sized salary, but you’ll definitely get a memorable day during your travels
In today’s Bangkok Post there’s an advert for Westerners to be movie extras in a film currently shooting in Chiang Mai. If you are in the area now and interested in taking part, pay a visit to CastingThailand.com and email the application form to them. They’re looking for Westerners, both male and female, to take part in a movie that’s apparently set in Vietnam. There’s no further info about who’s starring in it or what’s the budget, but that’s half the fun. These casting calls periodically come up in the classified ads of national newspapers so it’s worth keeping an eye on them if you’re curious about getting movie work. Who knows where it might lead?
A lot of movies are filmed in Thailand and across Asia these days – the new Batman movie just concluded filming in Hong Kong, and Christian Bale was filming in Thailand a few months ago on Warner Herzog’s Rescue Dawn. Possibly the most famous film shot in Thailand is The Beach, using Koh Phi Phi as its backdrop, or James Bond’s The Man With The Golden Gun, where Scaramanga’s lair was set amongst the limestone karsts of Krabi.

The surefire place to get work as an extra is in Bollywood, where the demand for westerners as movie extras is insatiable. Head to Bombay and you’ll soon get snapped up – Steve Baker wrote this excellent article detailing what it was like to be a Bollywood movie extra.
