Moving turmoil at Travelhappy Towers as we bid farewell to the leafy sub sois of Sukhumvit Soi 22 and head for a sky high condo on Soi Asoke

I'm writing this surrounded by boxes. We're in the final throes of moving to a new apartment, which will be happening tomorrow morning. After two years of living in Bangkok serviced apartments - first Belleville and then House By The Pond, both documented in my rundown of Cheap Long Term Accommodation in Bangkok - we've decided to rent a non-serviced apartment and see how it goes. It's superficially more expensive and less flexible to rent a non-serviced apartment, because you have to sign a one year lease and pay extra for internet, satellite TV and cleaning, whereas all of those things are usually included in your monthly rent with a serviced apartment, and you can decide to move out with a month's notice and no penalty.

However, with a non-serviced apartment, you do get a much wider choice of where to live in Bangkok, and we're going to be 30 floors up in a quite posh condo overlooking Soi Asoke, one of Bangkok's key roads and very near the Skytrain and MRT. It's going to be a bit of a change to the sleepy subsoi we currently live on, as directly outside our new place is a four lane freeway, but having the extra space and light should make a big difference. We've also had to put up with there being a building site opposite our current apartment since the beginning of the year, which has been as noisy as you'd imagine. It's pretty hard to avoid construction work in Bangkok as the city is perpetually pulling down and putting up new building, constantly under renovation - but hopefully, they won't be able to build next to our new place. Famous last words...

Anyway, I'm looking forward to getting tomorrow over and done with so we can settle in and finally relax after all the stress that goes with moving. Even though my girlfriend and I have tried really hard to not accumulate stuff while living here, there still seems to be an awful lot of books... not to mention the secret cache of shoes I discovered yesterday that was enough to fill a packing box on their own... Let's hope the internet works as promised in the new place otherwise this site might go a bit quiet for a few days.
