Not for the squeamish, Phuket’s Vegetarian Festival sees spectacular and gruesome rites of self-mortification as devotees purify their bodies. Happening every October, this year the week long festival is set to begin on October 22nd

It may be a vegetarian festival, but there’s plenty of blood and broken flesh at Phuket’s annual purification ceremonies. Having attended last year, I can vouch that the Phuket Vegetarian Festival is as full-on as the photos attest – you can see my own pics of devotees who have pierced their cheeks with swords and tree branches and plenty of other ingenious devices.
