Not for the squeamish, Phuket’s Vegetarian Festival sees spectacular and gruesome rites of self-mortification as devotees purify their bodies. Happening every October, this year the week long festival is set to begin on October 22nd

It may be a vegetarian festival, but there’s plenty of blood and broken flesh at Phuket’s annual purification ceremonies. Having attended last year, I can vouch that the Phuket Vegetarian Festival is as full-on as the photos attest – you can see my own pics of devotees who have pierced their cheeks with swords and tree branches and plenty of other ingenious devices. You can also read my article on our time at last year’s Phuket Vegetarian Festival and get more practical info on attending yourself.
