If you like eating Thai food, you can learn to cook your own in Thailand at the many Thai cooking classes available in Chiang Mai and Bangkok. Here’s a couple of suggestions to get you started

One of the main reasons people love visiting Thailand is Thai food – the exotic mix of tastes and textures is hard to resist. And for those who want to have a go at making their own Thai dishes, there is a plethora of Thai cooking schools in both Chiang Mai and Bangkok.

Chiang Mai is definitely the capital of Thai cooking classes, with scores of cooking schools competing for your attention. I can personally vouch for Smart Cook cooking school, with whom I spent a day learning how to make spring rolls, green curry, Pad Thai and even more dishes. From going to market to select the ingredients, to learning how to prepare them and the philosophy behind the balance of ingredients, to actually eating all the food you prepare which leaves you absolutely stuffed at the end of it, the day is really good fun. Best of all, it all takes place in a beautiful Thai teak house with an outdoor kitchen setup for each student. You also get a cookbook of the Thai recipes made during the day so you can recreate them when you get back home – they’ve even suggested thoughtful substitutions for stuff if you can’t get the exact Thai herbs.

Smart Cook doesn’t have a website, but you can book through ChiangDao.com or contact them direct:

Smart Cook Thai Cookery School at 21 Moonmuang Road, Soi 5, Chiang Mai. Telephone: +66 53-41830

In Bangkok your options are more limited for Thai cooking classes. Most of the classes available are luxury options in 5 star hotels and are unsurprisingly very expensive. One Thai cooking class in Bangkok that is affordable is Banpai. That’s a link to their official site. I don’t have personal experience of this, but it got a glowing review from Jason Kottke and his wife Meg went they went there in November 2005.

If you like food, this is definitely a worthwhile day out – and for around £20, it’s excellent value – lunch and dinner are included, after all.

If you can’t take a Thai cooking class in Thailand you might find this site interesting
http://www.thaifoodtonight.com
It’s got about 30 Thai dishes with online cooking videos for each dish. Good if you like to cook Thai food at home
