Climbing is not perhaps the first thing you think of when you think about a holiday in Thailand, but the limestone karsts of Krabi – where James Bond: The Man With The Golden Gun was filmed – are ideal for memorable ascents

I have to say climbing is one of those things that I will very probably never do, but I have met several people who rave about making ascents up the craggy cliffs of Krabi. I’m happy to enjoy the beautiful scenery from a dive boat, but it has to be said that the view from the top must be absolutely spectacular. I recently spotted Thailand: A Climbing Guide by Sam Lightner, which provides a comprehensive guide to climbing not only in Krabi but also Bangkok, Phra Nang, Koh Phi Phi, Chiang Mai, and Vang Vieng in Laos.

Sam has his own Thailand climbing website to promote the book, and points out that it also contains “all the pertinent climbing information in clear photographs and topographies. The history, geology, and legends from the areas are covered as well by this book. Most important is that by paying for this book you are paying for the very equipment you will need to have a relatively safe climbing trip to Thailand.” That last bit is a reflection of the fact that Sam has put all the profits he’s earnt from his climbing guide into rebolting each of the climbing routes in Thailand, to ensure other climbers can make a safe ascent. You can read more about rebolting on his website.

So, if you’re interested in climbing in Thailand, this is the book to get, not only for the information but because it’s helped made your climbing safer already.
