Moon Handbooks are looking for someone to write the first edition of their Thailand Guidebook, stepping in to an already crowded market
You can see the full Moon Handbooks Thailand Guidebook writer job post at Bangkok Craigslist. (A savvy place to post it). There’s more info on Moon Handbook’s own site. I find the idea seriously tempting, but the sheer enormity of trying to cover a country the size of Thailand and the endless fiddly details you have to document rather than swanning about writing poetic takes on the Thailand experience would probably finish me off.
Josh Berman wrote a great guide to writing travel guidebooks on his own site which is an excellent reality check for wannabe guidebook writers (Josh also wrote the Moon Handbook for Belize and co-authored the Moon Handbook for Nicaragua); Carl Parkes, an old hand travel writer based in San Francisco, wrote the first edition of National Geographic Traveler Thailand which he “hated” apparently; and, besides, when you’re up against someone like Joe Cummings, the long time author of Lonely Planet Thailand who Josh recently interviewed for Transitions Abroad, it’s pretty hard to think of what else you could possibly say about Thailand in a guidebook format that Joe hasn’ t already covered. [Joe's own site is at joecummings.com/]
