Thailand has an excellent rail network that makes it easy and affordable to move around the country. The State Railway of Thailand also has its complete timetable available online to help you plan your journey
Train journeys still have a certain romance to them, and in Thailand it's still one of the best ways of getting around the big distances between Thailand attractions, particularly Bangkok and Chiang Mai in the north. You can also catch the train all the way to the border with Laos and with Malaysia in the South. The price of the ticket depends on what class of seat you want - the standard is with fan, with airconditioning being a fair bit more, but still not enough to break the bank.
The fares for all routes as well as the train times are listed - in English! - on the State Railway of Thailand website. Click the horizontal links to find out the relevant info. I would suggest you use this as a rough planner and not take it as gospel, as things change fast in Thailand. You can book your tickets direct at Hua Lumphong rail station - the main rail terminus in Bangkok - or get a travel agent to do it for you in Khao San Road - they'll charge you a few extra baht commission as they have to send someone to get it for you.
Also check out the excellent world train guide Seat 61 for a complete guide including photos of what the trains look like and routes that will be of particular interest to foreign travellers.
