You couldn’t make this stuff up. Thailand’s latest movie features Bangkok being invaded by sperm that takes over the city, impregrates all the local women and creates clones of the film’s hero – and this is meant to be a romantic comedy!
Today’s WTF? moment: Here is the poster I saw today in the Bangkok Post on the movie listings page, right next to the opening of The Good Shepherd. It’s called The Sperm, or “Asujaak” in Thai, and the strapline is “One night, one girl, one gazillion sperm – an outrageous comedy of orgasmic proportions!”.
So this is basically “When Sperm Attacks”. Clearly director Taweewat Wantha has decided to take a pot shot at the crown for Maddest Film Ever.

So what on earth is it about? I’ve had a hunt around online and can only find a few bits of info about The Sperm in English – the official site is a well put together Flash effort but is Thai language only. Wise Kwai noted on his Rotten Tomatoes blog about Thai Films last month that
“The Sperm is a strange beast, apparently involving an invasion of sperm that impregnant a large portion of Thailand’s female populace, and they all give birth to identical, pint-sized CGI humanoids that look like escapees from Shrek. Not that this is necessarily bad. In the hands of Teewewat, sub-par CGI has a way of being charming.
There’s also a 50-foot-tall guy and a 50-foot-tall gal wreaking havoc on Bangkok.
That’s about all I can describe. It’s going to be insane.” [link]
There’s a bunch of screen shots at DekNang, a trailer (in Thai language, natch) at ThaiWeb2.0, and a not-wholly-coherent plot synopsis at MovieSeer.
What’s particularly ironic about The Sperm being released is that it’s just a few weeks after the furore about Chotiros “Amy” Suriyawong and “that dress”, an obscure Thai actress who attended in a Bangkok awards ceremony wearing a Liz Hurley-esque revealing dress and promptly attracted the ire of the government for being “immorally dressed”. I’m sure they’ll thrilled about this new movie, then…
Sidenote: The Sperm is mentioned on Kaiju Shakedown too, where Simon Abrams comments that “Grant Morrison, renowned comic book writer and weirdso extraordinairre, wrote in a two issue story about evil sperm that attack California in his 13 issue series The Filth.”
