Another slew of great Asia related travel links for your entertainment and inspiration. Or maybe just sniggering at the funny signs.
Magic Bus: On the Hippie Trail from Istanbul to India is Rory MacLean’s retracing of the Hippie Trail that marked the beginning of the modern travel industry in the Sixties and Seventies, a six thousand mile trek that now leads through war zones and some of the world’s most chaotic cities. Here’s a comprehensive interview with Rory Maclean about the writing of the book on my other website, SpikeMagazine.com
Following on from my recent Ghost Buildings of Bangkok post which has been getting a lot of attention recently, this
abandoned Russian embassy in Bangkok is fascinating too.
Neatorama also has this spectacular rundown of
Amazing Asian Temples with absolutely breathtaking temples. I’d never heard of the mesmerisingly all-white Wat Rong Khun in Chiang Mai before I read this, but I’ll be heading up there some point soon to see it.
The ever interesting Dark Roasted Blend featured my Pissing And Whistling Prohibited photo in their great rundown of Strange Signs. (Don’t forget Cafe Dung, Funny Engrish Tshirts and my Engrish collection and if you like funny sign stuff).
Tim Leffel’s Cheapest Destinations blog has a whole section dedicated to cheap travel in Asia, and Tim also runs two other sites – Perceptive Travel and World’s Cheapest Destinations, in which Asia unsurprisingly features quite heavily too.
I found this Cambodia Now book recently, about two expats living in modern Cambodia, and it looks like an interesting take on 21st century Cambodia. The genocide of the civil war is still very recent, but there is more to Cambodia than just the atrocities, and this book looks like it tries to find the hope amongst Cambodia’s still very troubled present. I’ve yet to read the book, but I think it’s a worthwhile effort to try and take new perspectives on Cambodia.
Finally, here’s the Wikipedia entry to one of my favourite songs, Ramblin’ Man by Lemon Jelly. Those of you with musical skills as well as wanderlust should consider building your own soundtracks too…
