If you're from the USA and travelling for an extended period, you might be away from home when your vote counts. A new website aims to make it easy for you to vote while you're overseas
When you think of travelling, you think of exotic destinations, beautiful beaches, glorious sunshine...not standing in queue to stick a piece of paper in a ballot box. However, if you're away from home on a round the world trek or working overseas, it's important to remember that your vote still counts in elections back home. Trouble is, no one makes it easy for you to make that vote when you're abroad.
The last US Presidential election took place while my girlfriend was teaching English in Japan. She diligently filled out all the paperwork to register to vote, only to encounter endless hassle and unhelpfulness from the American Embassy. It was only pure tenacity that let her finally get her ballot submitted. She's not been alone in experiencing a lot of trouble simply trying to do her duty as a good citizen - the people behind the Overseas Vote Foundation were inspired by their own frustrating experiences of trying to vote to set up an entire website to making it easier. The site will lead you through the entire process of filling in your registration form and tell you where to send it. If they could do the same for the UK, I'd be all set.
