Jetstar Vietnam have shaken up the domestic flight market in Vietnam, providing numerous flights between Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City along with several other major Vietnamese tourist destinations
While there have been lots of budget airlines providing cheap international flights into Vietnam, until recently there was little choice available for domestic flights in Vietnam. National carrier Vietnam Airlines was pretty much the only choice, and its high prices reflected its monopoly. (A quick look at Compare Flight Prices shows Vietnam Airlines charging over $450 for a Ho Chi Minh City to Hanoi return flight. Ouch). However, since May 2008 budget carrier Jetstar have been flying domestic Vietnam routes after taking over Pacific Airlines.
Jetstar Vietnam have several weekly flights between Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City (Saigon), along with flights to Hue, Nha Trang, Danang (for Hoi An) and other key Vietnam cities. A round trip ticket between Ho Chi Minh and Hanoi is around 2,500,000 Vietnamese Dong, including all taxes – that’s around $150 US. Visit Skyscanner to compare Jetstar Vietnam flights with other carriers to get the best price. Watch out for the baggage restrictions – the cheapest fare only allows you carry on luggage and no check-in. You’ll need to choose the second cheapest fare to get the usual 20kg check-in luggage allowance.
I’ve written before about how much I like Hanoi, as well as the beautifully preserved artisan town of Hoi An (an hour’s drive away from Da Nang) and the seaside fun and scuba diving of Nha Trang.
Don’s article How Much Money Do I Need In Vietnam is essential reading for any Vietnam trip, as is Vietnam: 10 Not So Obvious Places To Visit if you’re looking to get away from the usual stops on the Saigon to Hanoi route followed by most travellers. His in-depth guide to exploring Vietnam by motorbike (even if you’re a complete bike n00b) is inspiring – if slightly scary – stuff. And of course, wherever you go in the country, knowing how to bargain in Vietnam will stand you in good stead. Before you go to Vietnam, make sure you have your visa – if you need to get a Vietnam visa in Bangkok, follow the link for info on how to do it.
