Afraid I don’t know any motorbike companies direct Brian – I think you would definitely be hard pressed to ride to and from HCMC to Hanoi in two weeks – it is a long, long way. You wouldn’t have much time for anything else. If you cannot figure out driving the whole length of the country, there are plenty of guys in Nha Trang that will take you on 3/4 day bike tours in the central highlands. This article is a serious eye opener for me. I thought I would need alot more to travel around. Seriously great help.
Could you please give me some advice, we are looking to go in September for about 2 weeks, 4 guys and we would really like to hire our own motorbikes/scooters. We dont want a guide, we just want to make our own way from Ho Chi Minh (saigon) to Hanoi, Ive organised flights from Cape town to Saigon and then return from hanoi, do you think any of the guys that rent bikes out would let us do it, even if we have to put the bikes on a train and send them back down. Or do you think we should travel up and back down again.

Thanks Pete – yes, definitely worth having everything in order at any Immigration point (for any country) to avoid unnecessary hassle. Communist countries tend to be real sticklers for paperwork…

Immigration can be a-holes upon arrival if you don’t have everything in order. They will hassle you if you cannot show them a return or on going ticket or tell them where you plan to stay. Be prepared for this. Write down a name of a hotel even if you don’t plan to stay there just so you can show them something. Also, I saw them detain a poor Korean fellow because he arrived with no CASH. He was trying to explain that he was planning on paying with a credit card but they were giving him such a hard time that it left a bad taste in my mouth that took a few beers and bowls of soup to wash away! All in all a great experience and I would re-visit Vietnam.

Thank you very much!! I will move to Hanoi in a couple of months and therefore i would like to know how much to rent a room would cost! I am pretty comfortable with very few confort! I will earn 500USD per month and I will have free lunch in work days. Do you think it’s enough?
