I just got back from Vietnam, just under 2 weeks back, my friend and I attempted to check out some of theses suggested places, as you'll see we had fairly average weather, and on that note I would not recommend Vietnam during it's winter, well not if you want beach weather (unless you like cool rainy days).

Ho Chi Minh Museum, Hanoi:
Mmm, was just another (almost) boring museum, with a nice flavour of propaganda.

Da Nang: Well after the Ho Chi Minh museum, I realised that Don must have a good sence of humour, or needs to get out a bit more with comments like " it has one of the most beautiful beaches in the world" you must be joking, Da Nang has 2 major beaches one really bad beach, and another long but average beach (though it did have ridable waves). The seafood was very expensive. We did the motorbike ride along the along the crest of Monkey Mountain on the Son Tra Peninsula, it was worthwhile, again we would have enjoyed it more if the weather was OK. "Marble Mountain, is popular for a reason–it’s amazingly beautiful and unique" amazingly beautiful if you think a coupple of hills with a somewhat rugged appearance surrounded by marble industries, houses, kitch looking cement buddist temples, and a horrific concreate scar of an elevator which is a blight on this already ruined eyesore of a location. "Mecca for surfers from all over the world, especially in winter" well it was winter and the surf was up, and there was only one guy surfing on the entire stretch of coast, perhaps "a Mecca for a surfer" might be more of an apt description!

4. Hon Gai Peninsula: well didn't quite make it, though went for a nice ride on a beach on a hired scooter on the peninsular between Hon Gai and Na Trang (the average weather was not much of an incentive to go any further)

Bach Ma National Park: again we got close and wanted to explore but the weather way too dismal.

Don,
My wife and I leave from California to HCMC tomorrow and our loose itinerary was influenced greatly by this writeup. We went from being excited about Sapa, to finding how over-visited it is, to nearly booking a flight into Laos instead. Then we found this post, and have now added Bai tu Long, and Cham island to our trip and we're now VERY excited about just staying in Vietnam for the full 14 days we have. Thank you very much.

Great list. We just got back from a month long trip through Vietnam with our 2 kids - ages 3 and 6 - and loved it all. (<a href="http://mylittlenomads.com/2010/01/trip-review-vietnam/" rel="nofollow">Vietnam Trip Review.</a>) We didn't everything on this list of course but there is so much to see in this country everyone has their own collection of favorites. The beaches rock too.

Great list of places to visit!

It's amazing how much Vietnam has to offer if you, the traveler, makes a little effort!

Small country, but so much to see!
