Thonglor and Ekamai are two of Bangkok’s best districts for investigating after dark – but where to begin amongst the hundreds of bars, restaurants and clubs? A new website aims to help visitors easily find their way to Thonglor and Ekamai’s best places
Thonglor and Ekkamai are probably the two neighbourhoods of Bangkok that are most densely packed with restaurants, bars and nightclubs. Nestling side by side in central Bangkok, groovy, rough-around-the-edges Ekamai is within stumbling distance of oh-so-trendy Thonglor, and the two districts exert a fascinating influence on each other and co-mingle their respective atmosphere too. There are enough places to eat and drink and party in Thonglor and Ekamai that it would take several weeks of being out every night, all night, to get through them all. The main problem is finding each of these establishments in a bewildering sea of choices and, of course, deciding on the gems that suit your own particular taste.
The recent launch of the Thonglor-Ekamai website comes to the rescue by providing a superb Thonglor Ekamai map that’s been created by none other than Nancy Chandler, Bangkok’s foremost cartographer (though I personally prefer the Bangkok Groovy Map). The Thonglor-Ekamai map is a little overwhelming at first glance due to the sheer numbers of places listed – but that also is why it’s so useful, and further inspection reveals a thoughtfully laid out, densely info-packed guide that’s easy to understand and follow to your chosen destination.
At the moment the Thonglor Ekamai site doesn’t have reviews of every single place on the map – unsurprising, given there are literally hundreds of places to visit. It does however have reviews of several notable neighbourhood places, like Thonglor Serenade and the WTF bar.
It also lists all the Restaurants and Nightlife on individual pages and googling most of the establishment’s names will bring up other reviews. The ThonglorEkamai Twitter feed is also a great way of hearing about new events happening in the area and new places opening.
In short, the Thonglor-Ekamai map and website are already an invaluable guide to this vibrant area of Bangkok, and super useful for visitors and residents alike. Hopefully they can continue to expand and update the site to keep up with Thonglor and Ekamai’s ever changing nightlife and help a wider audience discover it too.
