The iPad 2 is officially available in Thailand and at a competitive price too – but at the moment it’s hard to find Bangkok shops that actually have the iPad 2 in stock
Apple’s iPad 2 officially launched in Thailand in May 2011. Pricing is quite competitive compared to the UK – here are the current prices as of June 2011.
16 GB 15900 THB
32 GB 18900 THB
64 GB 21900 THB
Wifi and 3G sim card
16 GB 19900 THB
32 GB 22900 THB
64 GB 25900 THB
The Thailand iPad 2 is unlocked when sold so they will work with any carrier’s SIM card. The prices are comparable to buying the iPad 2 in the US. However, they are somewhat cheaper than the official UK price for the iPad 2 because there isn’t 20% VAT added on to the price.
The only problem for tourists coming to Bangkok looking to buy an iPad 2 is actually trying to find a store that has them in stock. There are many licensed Apple resellers like iBeat and iStudio across the city but the supply of iPad 2 has been very limited. When they arrive in stores they are gone again within a day. Quite how long it’s going to take until the iPad 2 is available and on the shelves at all times in Bangkok stores is anyone’s guess. It’s particularly annoying as all the Apple resellers have huge great iPad 2 displays in their windows – so they’re promoting a product they haven’t got to sell!
The best thing to do if you have your heart set on buying an iPad 2 in Bangkok is to contact the shop beforehand and see if you can get some information on availability. Check this official Apple list of iBeat official authorised Apple resellers in Thailand – you should be able to get someone who speaks English if you give them a call. You can also try AOB Mobile in MBK (on the 4th floor) who are one of the bigger iPad 2 suppliers.
Alternatively you might want to consider buying the iPad 2 in Hong Kong or Singapore, as prices are the same there — in Hong Kong it’s even cheaper (Hong Kong is the cheapest place to buy electronics outside the USA due to no sales tax) but Hong Kong is also facing supply restrictions. Check the Hong Kong Apple store and Singapore Apple store pages for exact prices.
I got my iPad 2 through ordering it online from the Apple Store Thailand – the prices are above are the official Apple prices for the iPad 2 in Thailand as quoted on their site, so be sure to check prices are the same at any store. Items ordered from the Apple Store Thailand actually ship from Singapore via DHL – shipping is free.
