If you’ve been watching the news, you can’t have failed to have heard about Cyclone Nargis which has killed at least 15,000 people in Myanmar this weekend and left hundreds of thousands homeless. The country was a mess before the cyclone hit thanks to the military junta, but now 5 provinces are a bona fide disaster area and it’s unlikely Burma’s military elite will be able to cope in helping its impoverised citizens.
Various aid agencies are already gaining access to the country and distribute food and shelter - if you can afford to donate anything - even $5 will help - to UNICEF or Save The Children, please do so. (CNN has a list of other aid agency websites).
Sadly the death toll is probably going to keep rising and the effects of the cyclone will be felt long after the headlines have disappeared. Giving to the aid agencies is all that most of us can do of practical help, but it’s a start to helping the Burmese get back to some semblance of normality - there may even be some political ramifications to come out of this catastrophic event too, but a humanitarian disaster needs to be averted first.
