Despite it size and cultural importance, Bangkok has never been famed for its local art scene or prestigious art galleries. However, there is a thriving art scene in the Big Mango - you just need to know where to look.

Bangkok Art And Cultural Centre
The recent opening of the Bangkok Arts and Culture Centre finally provided the city with a big space to stage international art exhibitions. Located at National Statium Skytrain station, the cyclindrical shaped centre has a mix of local and foriegn artist displays. There are already concerns about how well the centre can keep up its ambitious remit, but for art lovers who don't mind hunting down small galleries, Bangkok has plenty of other art options too. The excellent site ArtSceneTV has a comprehensive rundown of pretty much every gallery in Bangkok, from the big commercial galleries to the tiny student showcases. Each gallery has its own page of info and lush photos too.
There is also the awesome WearEver, probably the world's only art gallery-laundrette-cafe, the brainchild of Ida Promgeen. WearEver is located quite near Khao San Road too, which makes it convenient to go see. There is a great article about WearEver here - I had to link the archived version at Wayback as the original ArtThailand site has unfortunately been hacked. Sadly you can't see the photos of WearEver on the archived version, but the article should be enough to pique your interest.
